Part Five: Performance Reviews (Completely Unbiased, Of Course)
Every workplace eventually reaches that moment in the year where it’s time for evaluations. Honest assessments. Clear metrics. Constructive feedback. Or in this case, a wildly subjective review of four studio assistants who have never once acknowledged their employment, their responsibilities, or the concept of accountability.
Still, the people demand transparency. And as their self-appointed team leader, I feel obliged to deliver a proper assessment of each member’s strengths, weaknesses, and overall contributions.
Let’s start with the boss.
Minky – Operations Director
Performance Rating: Exceeds Expectations
Minky continues to demonstrate exceptional leadership by doing almost nothing — yet doing it with such confidence and poise that the rest of the team instinctively falls into line. She excels in quiet supervision, poised observation, and maintaining an atmosphere of calm authority. Her ability to oversee operations from high vantage points is unmatched.
Areas for improvement: None. She refuses to take feedback. And frankly, she’s right…. except the poop issue.
Uno – Senior Advisor and Professional Observer
Performance Rating: Meets and Mysteriously Exceeds Expectations
Uno’s greatest skill is timing. He appears exactly when needed, never early, never rushed, always composed. His watching technique is refined, patient, and deeply philosophical. His mentoring of Stumpy — though unspoken — is impactful.
Areas for improvement: Occasionally takes extended breaks to stroll in the garden contemplating existence. Hard to track. Possibly intentional.
Sox – Style and Culture Manager
Performance Rating: Strong Performer (With Occasional Excessive Flair)
Sox brings personality to the workplace. His enthusiasm is infectious. His white socks and whiskers brighten the mood. He participates in all activities with gusto and provides excellent morale support through physical comedy, random sprints, and intense curiosity.
Areas for improvement: Sometimes disrupts workflow with “energy surges.” Could moderate enthusiasm between 7pm and midnight.
Stumpy – Shadow Specialist and Stealth Operations
Performance Rating: Quiet Achiever
Stumpy is the most elusive member of the team but also one of the most reliable. He appears soundlessly, disappears with equal skill, and monitors studio activity from angles unknown to the rest of us. His stealth is unparalleled. His off-duty reconnaissance is thorough.
Areas for improvement: Visibility. Or maybe not. Hard to say. It’s his brand.
Team Dynamics
Overall, this is a solid unit. Each member fills a role that no one else could manage — mostly because no human being would willingly behave like this in a professional setting. Their communication style (silent). Their conflict resolution strategy (also silent). Their approach to meetings (refusing to attend unless they feel like it). All of it works surprisingly well.
Strengths of the Team
• Silent supervision
• High levels of presence without intrusion
• Strong loyalty to the workspace
• Natural understanding of hierarchy
• Ability to nap while maintaining complete situational awareness
Areas for Improvement
• None. They’ve made it clear they will not be changing.
• If anything needs adjusting, it’s probably me.
General Notes
Despite having no actual deliverables, no deadlines, no KPIs, and no interest in performance improvement plans, the team continues to bring structure to the studio simply by existing in it. Their quiet attention creates focus. Their presence creates comfort. Their personalities create atmosphere.
Do they understand the creative process? Probably not.
Do they contribute to it anyway? Absolutely.
If anything, they’ve performed beyond expectations by turning a workspace into a shared environment — a small, warm bubble where it feels like I’m never actually working alone.
