Your best-ranking page might be your least valuable one
Imagine ranking number one for “how to fix a leaky faucet.” You see green arrows in the report. But your phone never rings. Ouch.
That's the trap and it's most likely a keyword problem.
Why? Because AI didn't take your traffic. It took your job.
When AI Overviews show up, organic click-through can fall by more than 60%. Over 80% of searches now end without a click at all.
Your content is being demoted to source material.
So what can you do?
Realise that not every keyword got hit equally.
Three tiers.
Tier 1
Informational, like “what is a dental crown” and it’s fully resolved on the page.
Tier 2
A comparison, like “crown vs. veneer” and it’s summed up, but not settled.
Tier 3
Local and transactional, for example “dental crown cost Chicago”, and this is where somebody still has to pick up a phone.
Most brands are still pouring budget into Tier 1 because it used to build traffic. Now it builds chatbot impressions.
Do an audit to answer this uncomfortable question.
Pull your traffic from Google Search Console, then search each keyword manually as a customer would.
Would you need to click anything?
If not, that keyword's been claimed.
Wording changes everything.
“Dental crown cost” can still push someone to book.
“Average dental crown cost” gets answered by a single price range.
Group them together and you'll misjudge both.
Do the math on leads, not visits.
One keyword: 1,200 visits, zero leads.
Another: 90 visits, 14 leads.
If your reporting can't tell those two apart, your reporting is the problem.
Earning the Tier 2 click takes actual work.
AI already handles the first layer with the options, the definitions, the neutral overview.
If your page does the same thing, there's no reason to open it.
Narrow the problem.
Add real constraints.
Show numbers.
Make the decision easier, not just better informed.
Fewer keywords, better aligned with what actually pays.
