What Do You Do?

Someone asked me a question recently that stopped me in my tracks.

Not because I didn't know the answer.

Because I realised I'd been answering the wrong question for years.

The story came from a broadcaster who was introduced to a world leader as a famous sports presenter. After shaking his hand, the leader smiled and asked:

“So… what do you do?”

He explained that he presented football programmes.

The response came back.

“Yes… but what do you do?”

That's a completely different question.

Most of us answer with our job title.

“I'm a web developer.”

“I'm a consultant.”

“I'm retired.”

“I'm an accountant.”

But none of those describes what we actually contribute.

That story made me ask myself the same question.

For years I would have said I build websites, fix WordPress problems, teach AI, help people with technology, or run online businesses.

They're all true.

But they're not what I do.

After sitting with the question for a while, I realised something.

I help people make sense of technology.

That's it.

Whether it's WordPress, AI, websites, online marketing, or whatever new shiny object appears next year, they're just tools.

The real job is helping people move from confusion to confidence.

Helping people stop feeling overwhelmed.

Helping them understand enough to make good decisions.

That simple question changed how I see myself.

So let me ask you the same question.

Not…

“What's your job?”

But…

“What do you do?”

If someone asked you a second time, would your answer change?

I have a feeling it might.

Now that I like you, let me send you updates....

Regular updates. It’s not scary, just means you get to see all before everyone else….
