Risky Business: Building on Rented Land

Had one of those quiet “hmmm…” moments recently.

Not panic. Just awareness.

Because like a lot of us right now… I’m building with AI.

And it’s bloody powerful.

But also…

It’s not mine.

We’ve seen this before.

We built on Google with SEO.
Then Pinterest.
Then Amazon affiliates.

Now it’s OpenAI and Anthropic.

Different tools. Same pattern.

Build fast. Grow quick.
Then something changes.

Limits. Pricing. Algorithms.

And suddenly… you’re adjusting your entire business.

What I’m Doing

I’m all in on AI.

But only about 30%.

The other 70%?

Stuff I control.

Email. Membership. My own platforms.

The Rule

If one company disappearing would hurt, fine.

If it would wipe you out… that’s not a business.

That’s dependency.

It's better to own the racecourse, not be the racehorse.

Backup Thinking

Right now, we’ve got options.

If one tool breaks, switch.

No monopoly (yet).

That’s a window. Use it.

Why It Matters

AI is the current “juice”.

But every platform has its moment.

The smart play isn’t avoiding platforms…

It’s not relying on just one.

Quick Read TL;DR

  • AI is powerful, but not yours
  • Platforms change fast
  • Split your risk
  • Build what you control
  • Always have a backup

Now that I like you, let me send you updates....

Regular updates. It’s not scary, just means you get to see all before everyone else….
