The Era of the Individual Empire? Or Just Another Bigger-Better-Best Story?
I read “The Era of the Individual Empire” by Gary Vaynerchuk this week.
It’s powerful. Inspiring even.
One person. One brand. One global machine.
And yes — with platforms like YouTube, Instagram and tools from OpenAI, it’s more possible than ever.
But here’s the quieter question…
Is building an empire actually the lifestyle 99.9% of people need?
Or is it just the same Bigger. Better. Best. mindset in a new outfit?
Bigger Isn’t Always Better
The internet rewards scale.
More followers.
More reach.
More revenue.
More visibility.
But most people I speak to don’t want an empire.
They want:
- Time.
- Health.
- Stability.
- Meaning.
- A bit of breathing space.
Empire building often gives you attention.
It doesn’t always give you peace.
I’ve Done the Growth Thing
I’ve built businesses. Scaled teams. Chased expansion.
It’s exciting.
It’s also relentless.
More growth means:
- More responsibility
- More complexity
- More exposure
- More pressure
An empire doesn’t reduce stress.
It multiplies it.
And for many, it quietly owns them.
The 0.1% Personality Type
There are people wired for empire-building.
They love:
- Competition.
- Public pressure.
- Constant momentum.
- Being “on” all the time.
They thrive in it.
But that’s not most people.
Most people don’t want to turn their life into content.
They want to design a life that feels good to wake up to.
The Lifestyle Alternative
Instead of building an empire…
Build enough.
Enough income.
Enough flexibility.
Enough leverage.
Enough autonomy.
A lean digital setup earning solid money without fame or constant exposure can be life-changing.
You don’t need 10 million followers.
You need freedom.
The Real Reflection
Ask yourself:
Are you building something because it fits your personality…
Or because the internet glorifies scale?
Bigger is louder.
Better is personal.
The era of the individual empire might be here.
But the era of intentional lifestyle design?
That’s far more interesting to me.
Where do you sit?
Empire builder… or lifestyle architect?
Let me know.
