The No Clicks – SCAN ME Movement!

There is something wonderfully simple about a QR code.

You see it. You scan it. You’re there.

No typing.

No searching.

No remembering a website address.

No clicking through three or four menus trying to find the thing you were actually looking for.

Just SCAN ME.

And behind that simple little square?

The underlying link can be as complicated as you like.

Complexity Behind the Scenes. Simplicity for the User.

This is one of the things I like most about QR codes.

The person creating the QR code can build an incredibly sophisticated journey behind it.

It could:

  • Identify the campaign
  • Track the source
  • Record the time and location
  • Send the visitor to a specific landing page
  • Apply a discount
  • Open a payment system
  • Start a WhatsApp conversation
  • Download a document
  • Connect to Wi Fi
  • Add an event to a calendar
  • Take someone directly to an app
  • Change the destination later

The consumer doesn’t need to know any of that.

They simply see:

SCAN ME

And that’s the magic.

No Clicks. Just Scan.

Think about what normally happens when you ask somebody to visit a website.

You give them a URL.

They have to:

  1. Remember it
  2. Type it
  3. Check they’ve typed it correctly
  4. Wait for the page
  5. Find what they’re looking for
  6. Click the appropriate button

That’s a lot of friction.

Now compare that with a QR code.

Scan → Destination

Done.

The complexity hasn’t disappeared.

It’s just been moved away from the consumer.

And that’s a really important distinction.

Simplicity Creates Action

We often assume people don’t take action because they aren’t interested.

Sometimes that’s simply not true.

They don’t take action because taking action is a pain in the arse.

Every extra step creates another opportunity for somebody to give up.

Type this.

Click that.

Choose this.

Create an account.

Find the menu.

Enter your email.

Confirm your email.

Remember your password.

You get the idea.

The more complicated the journey becomes, the more opportunities there are for abandonment.

A QR code can remove several of those steps before the customer has even started.

We Love Saving Time

People talk endlessly about saving money.

And yes, we like saving money.

But I think there’s another increasingly valuable currency:

Time.

You can’t get it back.

If something saves me ten minutes, that’s valuable.

If something saves me ten clicks, that’s valuable too.

And if something saves me both?

Even better.

That’s where QR codes become particularly interesting.

A QR code can make the customer journey shorter while making the business process behind it smarter.

The Same QR Code Can Hide a Lot of Complexity

Here’s the clever bit.

The QR code itself doesn’t need to change.

You could put the same SCAN ME code on:

  • A restaurant table
  • A business card
  • A shop window
  • A poster
  • A product package
  • A property sign
  • A brochure
  • A receipt
  • A hotel room
  • A roadside sign

The customer sees exactly the same basic instruction:

SCAN ME

But what happens after the scan can be completely different.

That’s the beauty of separating the user experience from the technology underneath it.

The Best Technology Is Sometimes the Technology You Don’t Notice

I think we’re heading towards more of this.

Technology doesn’t necessarily need to become more visible.

It can become less visible.

The customer shouldn’t have to understand the technology.

They shouldn’t need to know whether they’re scanning a dynamic QR code, visiting a tracking URL, being redirected through a campaign platform or landing on a personalised page.

They just need to know one thing:

Scan this.

That’s it.

The complicated stuff is our problem.

Not theirs.

QR Codes Can Save Money Too

And here’s another interesting part.

Removing friction isn’t just about convenience.

It can reduce costs.

A printed brochure doesn’t need to contain every piece of information.

A restaurant menu doesn’t need to be reprinted every time the prices change.

A property sign doesn’t need a huge amount of detail.

A business card doesn’t need to contain every contact method.

A product package doesn’t need to explain everything.

The QR code can become the bridge between the physical world and the constantly changing digital world.

Print it once.

Update what’s behind it.

That’s potentially a pretty big saving.

The No Clicks Movement

Maybe that’s the real opportunity.

Not QR codes are clever technology.

Not look what QR codes can do.

But something much simpler:

No clicks. Just scan.

Reduce the number of decisions.

Reduce the number of steps.

Reduce the amount of typing.

Reduce the opportunity for people to give up.

And give people something they increasingly value:

Their time.

Because sometimes the smartest technology isn’t the technology that does more.

It’s the technology that makes doing something easier.

And that’s exactly what a good QR code can do.

SCAN ME.

You know what to do.

Now that I like you, let me send you updates....

Regular updates. It’s not scary, just means you get to see all before everyone else….
